Trends of transformation of party system in modern Germany

Annotation

This work highlights key trends of the transformation of the party system in modern Germany. The work shows the evolution of the party system, including the transition from a two-and-a-half party system to a multi-party one. Modern democratic society of Germany has become more exacting and demanding. The biggest parties have faced with current challenges. The FDP has lost universal role of “junior” partner in the formation of federal government coalitions, whereas Alliance '90/The Greens strengthened its position. Regional successes of some small parties indicate that not all voters are satisfied with the traditional parties. The author analyses the changing role of the main parties of Germany and the prospects of their further development. In the conditions of severe competition largest parties have to look for new opportunities to attract voters. The author makes a conclusion that modern Germany has the potential for the new parties’ development and further intensification of pluralism in the party system. Modern multi-party system is characterized by a greater variety of possible coalitions that makes modern political processes more complicated and dynamic.
