Role of the state wine monopoly and private monopolistic associations in the life of the Russian Empire in the beginning of 20th century


We present an assessment of the impact of state and private monopolies on the life of subjects of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. We assess the effectiveness of the wine monopoly introduction through an analysis of the memoirs of scientists of that time and contemporaries. We consider the issue of the influence of state drinking monopoly on “people’s alcoholism”. We separately highlight problem of interaction of private monopolistic associations with state authorities. The main source of the study is the memoirs of A.I. Novikov, laws and regulations, as well as the assessment of events by major contemporary economists.
