Treatment of toxic erosion of the cornea using a solution of sulphated glycosaminoglycan (sGAG) in the experiment

Annotation

Purpose: to inverstigate corneal reparative activity and protective 0.5 % effect of sulphated glycosaminoglican (sGAG) on model corneal toxic erosion. Material and methods: 18 grey male rabbits (36eyes) weighting between 2 and 2.5 were used. Model of corneal toxic erosion was induced by treatment benzalkonium chloride (BAK) for 7 days. Then all animals randomly assigned to 4 groups: 1st group was treated with 0.1 % BAK + 0.5 % sGAG, 2nd group was treated 0.5 % sGAG, 3rd group was treated with 0.1 % BAK + 0.9 % NaCl, in control group – 0.9 % NaCl. Animal observation took place daily and included anterior eye segment bio microscopy, staining cornea with fluorescein and morphological control by confocal scanning microscopy. Results: in 7 days after the impact corneal edema, erosion and inflammatory sings were observed in all cases. After starting the treatment full epithelisation in the first group was observed in 111 ± 5.62 hours, in the second one – in 10.66 ± 2.58 hours, in the control one – in 119.33 ± 27.73 hours, in the third – the experiment was finished in 120 hours (due to rood changes in corneal structure). Conclusion: terms of reepithelisation in the experimental groups indicate the presence of protective and re-generative features of 0.5 % sGAG solution in conditions of toxic impact.
