THE COMMON CRANE AS AN OBJECT OF THE INVENTORY STUDIES IN THE VOLGA FEDERAL DISTRICT

Annotation

Cranes are one of the most endangered families of the world avifauna. Reducing the number and range of this group of birds is primarily caused by the rapid change of their original habitat. Despite the wide spreading and relatively high numbers the Common Crane is quite vulnerable in the densely populated center of European Russia and listed in many regional Red Data Books in the Russian Federation. To organize the monitoring of its status and the effective protection the inventory studies are necessary. This species is a convenient model for developing methods of obtaining, keeping and applying the inventory information. The aim of the paper is investigation of a degree of fullness of inventory information on the Common Crane in the regions of the Volga Federal District. The experience of the inventory activities, their methodology and scope are analyzed; the important areas of the species range are identified in the Volga Federal District, the species number is calculated in regions of the Federal District and in the habitats important for the species. The data obtained are used to maintain the regional Red Data Books and adopt government decisions in the field of environmental management.
