The relevance of the work is reasoned by the lack of systematic information about the population of the indicator groups of animals (small mammals) on the territory of the South Kamchatka Federal Reserve. The purpose of this work was to study the fauna, the number and structure of small mammal communities in the vicinity of the cordon Ozernoy at Kuril Lake. 125 trap days were worked out and 35 animals from three species of rodents (Rodentia): Clethrionomys (=Myodes) rutilus, Clethrionomys (=Myodes) rufocanus, Microtus oeconomus were caught in two habitats – the stone birch forest and willow forest. The total abundance of small mammals in the study area was 28.0 specimens/100 trap days. The absolute numeric dominant in both habitats was the northern red-backed vole (С. rutilus), the abundance of which in the stone birch forest was 21.0 specimens/100 trap days, and 16.0 specimens/100 trap days in the willow forest. The subdominant in the stone birch forest was grey red-backed vole (C. rufocanus), in the willow forest it was tundra vole (M. oeconomus). Studied communities are characterized by low levels of species biodiversity, due to climatic and landscape ecological features of the territory. The violation of dominance in the community of small mammals in the willow forest alongside with a relatively low index of conservatism suggest that this habitat is characterized by resource capacity which is lower than in the stone birch forest and serves as a landline settlement. The community of small mammals in the stone birch forest in its faunistic composition is more similar to those of the caldera of the Volcano Uzon than of the Geysernaya River Valley. On the ratio of the indices of species diversity and the alignment of the structure of theriocenosis the stone birch forest is similar to that of a similar habitat in the valley of the Geizernaya River and the average structure of the communities of the mountain taiga landscapes of Siberia.
